In this BONUS episode we’re discussing Beenie Man and Bounty Killer who put on a full-on show on Verzuz, representing Dancehall to the fullest in the first virtual live experience on the platform founded by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland. #BeenieManvsBountyKiller soundclash edition was the highest view today for the music showcase series (previous battles include Jill Scott vs Erykah Badu, Babyface vs Teddy Riley, Ludacris vs. Nelly, Scott Storch vs Manny Fresh and more to come.)
The announcement was met with excitement as fans of the two titans of Dancehall shared in the cultural significance. Brands like Apple Music, Vibe Magazine, BET, Spotify and more tuned in and promoted the battle with interviews and playlists prior to the main event and tuned in to get in on the hype.
It meant a lot for Beenie Man and Bounty Killer who have both seen little of their international audiences due to travel restrictions prior to COVID-19. As they stepped back into the international limelight over 470,000 fans watched in awe as these two battled chune fi chune, showcasing authentic clash culture complete with a sound system, early warm segment, toasting, lyrical exchanges, storytelling and dubplates! This Verzuz set the bar high from an executions standpoint — little to no WiFi issues, continuous stream on IG Platform and having both parties in the same stream in-person. The series gets better and better.
For the international fans it was a chance to see how we roll when it comes to battles, for the West Indian diaspora it was a welcome to the bashment appreciation moment for Beenie Man, Bounty Killer and Dancehall as an influential musical genre. Buju Banton, Shaggy, Aidonia, Kranium, Spice, Rihanna and even Jamaica’s Prime Minister showed up to support the icons while they’re alive and well. In his Verzuz recap Swizz Beatz states, “Verzuz is an educational entertainment platform.” We all learned a few things watching and Jamaica and Dancehall showed up and showed out!
