Curlfest is a fun meet up with naturalistas celebrating the beauty of natural hair. Curly girls from the around the way gathered in Brooklyn’s Prospect park to chill, shop curly hair brands and apparel/accessory vendors, eat and just have a great time. As a first timer I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it ended up being a great time, partially because I didn’t have to wait on that long swag bag line. While there was much controversy over the origination of the event, but it didn’t really become clear until afterwards and certainly didn’t ruin my vibe. I brought my little one to enjoy the festivities, take pictures and I was mostly impressed with some of the professional picnic setups straight out an Ikea catalog.
While I was able to walk around, the lines — for the marketplace and the food trucks — were way too long. I stood in the food truck line listened to the tail end of the conversation with Ace Hood and his wife and just enjoyed the vibes. Big up to the Uber Soca cruise crew, they brought the island vibes to the stage with masqueraders, Dancehall and Soca music.
