Costa Rica has it’s first Afro-Latina Vice President. Epsy Alejandra Campbell Barr will become Costa Rica’s Vice President on May 8 along with new president Carlos Alvarado. While this is a great win for Carlos Alvarado, Campbell-Barr is making history as the first black woman to be Vice President for not just Costa Rica, but the entire Latin Amarican continent. Campbell
Epsy Campbell has been the head of the Center for Women of African Descent, the Alliance of Leaders of African descent in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Black Parliament of the Americas. Campbell’s grandmother reportedly migrated to Costa Rica from Jamaica with her husband. She’s named after her paternal grandmom and she’s proud of her Jamaican heritage. (The Grio)
We just celebrated Paula-Mae Weekes becoming President Trinidad & Tobago and now we’re celebrating Campbell Barr. Women are making history left and right and we are totally here for it.
