Red Bull’s Culture Clash went down in Atlanta and Popcaan’s Team Unruly crushed the competition again this year. Despite not having their team leader — it was announced just a few hours before the clash that Popcaan would not be attending due to reasons beyond their control — Jabba, ZJ Liquid and Jazzy T (Jamaica) held it down against Mike Will Made It’s Eardrummer (U.S.) ,Tinie Tempah’s Disturbing London (U.K.), Enjoy Life ft. Wondagurl (Toronto).
Based on the Jamaican sound clashes, which have roots in the 1950s, Culture Clash pits four crews against each other. Each crew occupies its own stage, and over four rounds they compete for the crowd approval. The crowd decides the winner, based on a decibel meter. (Red Bull)
I listened to the clash video Red Bull Radio, disappointed that there wasn’t any video stream, but had a good time banging on my wall like a zinc fence and two-finga saluting in my living room. The battle ended up being a Dancehall vs. Trap clash (not mad at that) as Team Unruly had the crowd going from the first round. They followed the rules, didn’t repeat songs, had great dubs (Chronixx and Young MA dubs were my favorites) and brought out Atlanta’s unofficial musical mayor Jermaine Dupri.
