Tanisha Lawrence launched her vegan nail polish line LAW Beauty Essentials earlier this year for the spring collection and recently follow up with a winter collection in a bigger way with a press event in Brooklyn. The corporate girl born of Jamaican parents, Tanisha has always had a love for beauty products. After years of thinking about it and being inspired by her dad’s entrepreneurial spirit she went ahead to launch a color popping, easy drying non-toxic vegan nail polish brand with plans to expand in the future. I got to catch up with the Tanisha after the launch of her winter collection sponsored by BCake NY and Hiro Sake. Meech of Lush Me Nails & Cocktails offered guests dry manicures. Guests received gift bags courtesy of Miss Jessie’s and hydrating natural lip balm courtesy of LipLuv by AJDeLane.
Tell me about your background?
I was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. My parents are Jamaican. We keep the culture in our home as far as traditions, music, language, and food. I attended catholic school practically my entire life. I then continued on to New York City of Technology College. During high school I worked part-time jobs, then transitioned into full time jobs with major companies such as Chase Bank, Progressive Insurance and United Airlines.
What lessons did you learn from your Father owning his Caribbean restaurant and how does it impact your career/business?
I learned all you need is a vision to own something of your own. Once you believe, others will too. I learned you have to be excited about what it is your doing. I was there to witness the peaks and the lows of the business. My father was always a positive person, I think that’s most important.
What inspired you to go into the beauty industry?
My first experiences with beauty products involved nail polish. I’ve always love nail polish since I was a child. I recently started experimenting with make up. It was a ritual for me to get my nails done every two weeks. Having my nails done nicely is like a good hair day for me. I feel better. I wanted a product I was passionate about and I could not think of anything better than nail polish.
Why was it important for you to do a vegan nail polish?
I wanted to stay in tuned with the nail industry. To date, many major brands are converting to 5 free and better. Testing on animals is not necessary and old school. My vision is to stay up to date on trends and produce a product I’m proud to place on shelves. I’m a health conscious person and I wanted my brand to reflect me and who I am.
How has the the line been received thus far and do you have plans to expand in to other beauty products?
So far I’ve received great feed back. People are very receptive to the brand. They like what I’m bringing into the community. Healthy and fashionable nail polish! I’ve sold many polishes and customers are always suggesting colors they want me to carry which means to me they are willing to change over to my brand. I kept my name broad “LAW Beauty Essentials ” so I’m able to expand to other beauty essentials in the future, nail care products , beauty products all in the beauty industry.
How would you describe your Style & Vibes?
It’s very hard to describe my style. I’ll say my style is a cross between boho-chic because I’ll kill for a nice tunic or long sweater (my favorite pieces) but during my day to day errands I can’t help but wear gym clothing. However some days I mix them and wear my gym pants with cow boy boots, a sports bra and a tunic!
My personality is I’m shy in new surroundings, but once I’m comfortable I’m witty. I take things seriously, when something bothers me it takes a while to let it go! I’m working on that. I’m very organized. I need order otherwise I get anxious. But strangely my most memorable memories are ones unplanned.
