I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Raine pre-Triple the Focus. Although she is no longer a PR extraodinaire, she remains quite the wordsmith penning thought provoking Caribbean articles about music and culture. Be sure to keep up with her on site Mixed & Mastered and on Twitter
Favorite Social Media Sites: Twitter. Maybe Instagram – just maybe. perhaps. could be. maybe not.
Favorite Websites to Search: NPR, Jezebel, Netflix, Youtube
How has the Web Changed Your Job: When I first started out as a freelance journalist in the early – mid 2000s, I primarily worked with print publications and it was much easier to get freelance jobs that paid. When I made the transition to PR around 2006, I still worked toward getting placements in print outlets, but over the next couple of years there were so many new online publications that opened up – and the placements and results were much quicker. Now that I’m done with PR and dabbling back into the writing world, it is much easier to be ‘established’ as a blogger, but the revenue opportunities are a lot more scarce and competitive for traditional journalists.
How do you think the web has affected how people view Caribbean Culture: Caribbean artists, arts, films, restaurants, etc… are all right there at your fingertips. It has made what used to be ‘local’ now international because it is simple for anyone from anywhere in the world to google a song, a video, a genre of music, an artist, etc… There are also many more online outlets for promotion and publicity, and online vehicles are pretty simple to monitor and operate. Its a two-edged sword though, because at the current speed at which news is reported, there is less focus on accuracy, and damage control is in someways much harder. The web has made information easy to disseminate but harder to control.
What makes you a Caribbean Digital Diva? I’m just simply Raine. I do what I do in the best way that I can. No one has ever called me a diva, and I don’t call myself one – but I’m open to possibilities. I’d like to fancy myself as a Diana Ross-type character one of these days.
Female who inspires you: Shirley Chisholm – her 1972 Presidential slogan was ‘Unbossed and Unbought’ – that’s me. I don’t take bad-up or bribes. If I work with you or write about you it’s because I want to – there’s something worth working with or writing about.
3 favorite female Artistes: Jamaica Kincaid, Susan Blond, Dream Hampton.
