Styled by June premiered on VH1 last night and the only disappointment was that the show could have been an hour! In a world of pseudo stylist, wannabe image consultants and everyone “does” Fashion or PR; June Ambrose is the real deal, not just for her innate eye for fashion, but also how she keenly taps in her clients personality and pushes the envelope as much as possible without making them too uncomfortable. The show is a great inside look at fashion styling for high profile clients from the inside and the plot thickens when you add assistants and a little drama. With only one episode down I’m interested in seeing what the rest of the season brings. Here are five reasons I’ll be watching (you should too).
- Big moment for Black Women in Fashion: I usually keep race out of reason’s to do anything, but it’s inspiring to see a black woman (a Caribbean sistren at that) make waves in fashion. We all know about the issues regarding lack of color in fashion (from the runway to the glossies) and this show is simply a proud moment to revel in the achievements of one of our own.
- Storytelling: For June it’s about creating a great visual story for her clients, revamping and reinventing from clothes to the inner soul, she seems to pull something out of them, more than just putting designer clothes together. It will be interesting to see the transformations.
- Eli: Eli is June’s first assistant and you can already tell that he is going to be the break out star with abundant quotables that are T-Shirt worthy. This week he schools the new socialite turned assistant Rachel, “I can be your best girlfriend or that yeast infection that never goes away.” He’s going to be my favorite!
