Longevity in the music business has become fickle over the years. Musicianship has been replaced by beat machines and the perfection of vocals has been replace by pro tools. It’s refreshing to know that Third World, one of the best bands from Jamaica, has upheld their standard of quality music while ushering in their new album Patriots. With over 30 years in the business Third World has managed to stay true to their sound and their fans.
Third World performed for an intimate, yet lively audience at New York City’s Highline Ballroom. The band played for a few hundred fans and had everyone rocking as they performed Third World classics as well as music from their new album Patriots, “Revolutionary People” being my favorite new song they performed. They of course did Third World classics like “Forbidden Love” , my personal Third World favorite “Sense of Purpose” and of courseThere was not a person in the crowd who didn’t enjoy their performance. With special guests Tessanne Chin., an amazing singer who did a duet with the band, and new singer Donahue Jarrett (who’s vocals were not what I expected, but somewhat enchanting. I’d love to hear more from him).
The band, known for hits like “Try Jah Love” and “96 Degrees”, has been nominated for multiple grammy awards over the years, yet have never been able to take home the highly coveted award. Third World’s contribution to music has never been overlooked by their fans, which is why three local organizations honored them with awards. University of the West Indies Alumni Association (New York Chapter), Unchained Forever Inc. and JAMPACT recognized not only their contribution to reggae music, but their service to the community.
It was a great experience to see this band perform for such a diverse audience and see people enjoy Reggae music at it’s core. The elements of real instruments, vocals and profound lyrics fuels a synergy like no other, hence the reason Third World has remained a corner stone in the music and affection remain the Reggae Ambassadors.
