New York Fashion Week: Men’s is a new initiative created by the CFDA to spotlight menswear. Jamaican designer based in New York City, Glenroy March of D’Marsh Couture, has been designing clothes for men and women for years while being a stylist. He premiered his Spring/Summer 2016 new men’s collection Signature Glenroy at Coco-Mat. We caught up Glenroy after his collection premiere to get the scoop on the inspiration for his new collection.
What are some of the challenges in creating a menswear line?
The challenge in creating a men’s collection is knowing the men you are designing for. Color choices are always hard, because men do not like all colors.
But overall designing the D’Marsh men’s collection doesn’t pose too much of a challenge because the brand has its own identity that is mixing masculine with the feminine.
Menswear shows are not new, but this is the first time it’s being recognized as it’s own event separate from New York Fashion Week, what does this mean for the menswear industry?
It means a lot to designers like myself who does menswear. Now, with such an event, we have a dedicated platform to showcase our work to buyers, media and new clients.
How do you manage your women and accessories line in addition to your menswear line?
Each line under House of D’Marsh has a place in my heart and its season, but how I manage each line is like a house with different rooms: living, bathroom, and kitchen, however, the decor throughout the house is the same. That is what makes it a little easier to manage and separate each collection because the DNA is like the décor of the house which is consistent throughout the brand.
Who is the Signature Glenroy man and what’s your favorite piece from this collection?
The man that would wear signature Glenroy is a man of style. He is confident and has a love for detail. My favorite look from this collection is the grey short signature jacket.
Who were some of your inspirations in design while you were coming up?
My favorite is Valentino given the simplicity and excellence of his designs. He reminds a lot of myself and my values.
Has being of Caribbean descent influenced your design career?
Yes, without a doubt. It’s who I am and where I come from. It is the DNA of House of D’Marsh, and has impacted my brand identity.
What advice would you give to young designers?
Just have your own sense of style and identity and believe in it. Have a passion for what you do and work hard as it will have its rewards.
Describe your personal style?
My style reflects my mood, so it can be described as simple, unassuming and flexible.
What music are you “vibing to” right now?
Gospel is my favorite genre and right now I’m listening to “The Prayer” by Yolanda Adams and Donnie McClurkin.
