My little one loves anything related to art. Painting, crafting, molding shapes with clay and of course coloring. I’m always looking for new ways to feed her creativity and she absolutely loved the Curly Kids Coloring Book !
As a natural curly haired girl myself, I’m always looking for books, games and activities that reinforces how she feels about her own beauty of being a brown girl with curly hair. Over the last year I have had a number of hair conversations with her about hair. She’d comment, “I want my hair straight” or “Kids say my hair is too poofy”.
Explaining to a toddler (she’d say say she’s a big girl) that her hair is beautiful and versatile can be a bit challenging without reinforcement. I’m not against straight hair or even relaxers, but at this point in her life I want her to appreciate her natural hair and see the beauty in it before she/we makes the decision to alter it (when she’s of age to make decisions about her hair). She’s now in a place where she’s asking to leave her curls out and “wear her puffs to the side”, but I know that seeing positive images of curly haired girls that look like her will continue to remind her of own beauty.
I was happy to see the Curly Kids Coloring Book created by Akirashanti Byrd co-blogger of Curl Centric come to fruition. I’ve never seen a coloring book dedicated to curly girls in action and the book is Cheeks tested and most definitely mom approved!
The Curly Kids Coloring Book is a new product, and was created because Curl Centric understands the importance of representation. It is important for little girls with textured hair to see images that look like them. The book features more than thirty different images, including action shots, mermaids, princesses and ballerinas.
I received a few sample pages and I asked Cheeks color a few of them. She asked for more after completing them, can you guess which one was her favorite and which was mine?
